What is a GST invoice?
A GST invoice (or tax invoice) is the official document a GST-registered supplier issues to a buyer when goods or services are sold. Under the CGST Rules, 2017, it must contain specific fields — GSTIN, HSN/SAC code, taxable value, and the GST rate — and it must be raised within 30 days of supply for services. Without it, the buyer can't claim input tax credit and the supplier is non-compliant.
Who needs GST invoices
You must issue GST invoices if any of the following apply:
- Your annual turnover exceeds ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special-category states).
- You make inter-state taxable supplies — registration is mandatory regardless of turnover.
- You sell through e-commerce platforms.
- You voluntarily registered for GST to claim input tax credit.
If you're below the threshold and not registered, you issue a Bill of Supply instead — BuildInvoice supports that too with a single toggle.
